A control system for a vehicular automatic transmission system is configured to determine a target gear ratio 306 based on speed parameter 302 and accelerator input 304 signals and, if a shift inhibit condition is satisfied 308, inhibit 338 the initiation of a shift to the target gear ratio for an initial period of time 340. After the initial time period has elapsed, initiation of a shift to the target gear ratio is inhibited 344 until it is determined that the shift will not complete during lash crossing 346. Signals indicative of a powertrain torque (348,fig.15), current gear ratio (324,fig.15) and accelerator input may be used to determine whether the shift will complete during lash crossing 346. If the system determines that the shift will not complete during lash crossing, the inhibit is removed 342. Instructions for executing the method of control may be stored on a computer readable storage medium.
