A suspension damping force control system and corresponding method are provided. The control system is configured to control a damping force of an actuator (502, Figure 4) of an active suspension system (104, Figure 4) of a vehicle (1, Figure 4) in response to an external disturbance of a wheel (FL, FR, RL, RR Figure 4) with which the actuator is associated. The control system comprises one or more controllers (200, Figure 4). The control system is configured to: receive a sensed displacement parameter (Z, V, A) indicative of suspension displacement associated with the wheel; determine whether a condition is satisfied, during a suspension displacing phase (t1-t2) associated with the external disturbance. Satisfaction of the condition requires a derivative (V) of the sensed displacement parameter to be above a threshold, wherein the threshold depends on an amount of displacement (Z) indicated by the sensed displacement parameter. The control system then outputs a signal to control the damping force to be greater, during a suspension restoring phase (t2-t3) associated with the external disturbance, than if the condition is not satisfied, in dependence on satisfaction of the condition.
