A lead car (cars 1,5), which may be positioned as the first or last car in a train set, has traction motors 30; a pantograph 10 on its roof, relatively close to an end of the lead car; and a generation unit 40 with an electricity generator 42 driven by an engine, located relatively distant from the end of the lead car and underneath a passenger saloon floor. The electrical power to drive the traction motors is selected from that collected by the pantograph, or from the generation unit. The floor changes height from a lower level beneath the pantograph, to a higher level above the generation unit. An intermediate car (car 3) carries an underfloor transformer 50, receiving AC electrical power collected by a pantograph of another car in the trainset via a power cable 70 into its primary winding. The transformer has many secondary windings, each having a power line extending to ends of the intermediate car, supplying stepped-down AC electrical power to other cars of the trainset which can be selectively used to drive their traction motors. Preferably, the floor height in the intermediate car is the same as that above the generation unit in the lead car.
