A control system 110C to control winding speed of a winch 110 on a vehicle 100, the winch 110 having electric motor 116, so as to limit to a substantially constant prescribed winch line 114 tension or to a substantially constant prescribed value of torque applied to the drum 112. Winding speed may be dependent on or may match a speed of travel of the vehicle over a driving surface. Winding speed may be dependent on a speed of rotation of the vehicle powertrain, for instance wheel 102, 104 speed, and may be proportional to powertrain speed. The speed at which the vehicle 100 is pulled over-ground may be substantially equal to a speed at which the vehicle would be driven over ground if there an amount of wheel slip were less than a prescribed value. The prescribed value of winch cable 114 line tension may be selected through a user input device (figure 3). The system may limit, may apply a brake torque to the winch drum 112, which may effect regenerative braking, and may limit the rate of increase of torque applied to the drum 112 to the prescribed value. Power supply potential may be between 110V and 5kV. The vehicle may be electric or hybrid.
