A control system 110C to control winding speed of a winch 110 on a vehicle 100, the winch 110 having electric motor 116, winding speed being dependent on a speed of rotation of the vehicle powertrain, for instance wheel 102, 104 speed. Winch cable line 114 speed may be proportional to powertrain speed. The speed at which the vehicle 100 is pulled over-ground may be equal to a speed at which the vehicle would be driven over ground if wheel slip were below a certain value such as zero. System 110C may maintain a constant line tension or constant winch drum 112 torque, these values being selected through user input device (figure 3). The system may apply a brake torque to the winch drum 112, which may effect regenerative braking, and may limit the rate of increase of torque. Power supply potential may be between 110V and 5kV. The vehicle may be electric or hybrid, may have an inverter unit, an electric traction motor and a charge storage module, or battery 132.
