Method of controlling vehicle friction brakes 112 and electric powertrain 122 during single-pedal driving: depending on friction brake cleaning criteria being satisfied and accelerator pedal position, calculating a deceleration torque demand requested; and engaging the friction brakes to meet the deceleration torque demand. Criteria for brake cleaning may be amount of energy dissipated through friction braking within a rolling time duration period below threshold. The threshold may be calculated based on estimated corrosion level of the brakes 112. The electric motor 122 may decelerate in combination with friction brakes 112. Once the energy dissipation threshold is satisfied, the friction brakes 112 stop operating, only electric braking is performed; unless the brake torque demand exceeds the electric powertrain (e.g. regenerative braking) deceleration torque, in which case the friction brakes 112 supplements the brake torque.
