The time (TTC) until the possible collision is ascertained for a point in time in an interval during which at least one part of the object (2) is located in the travel envelope (6), namely on the basis of an absolute first speed (v1) of the first motor vehicle (1) and regardless of a second speed (v2) of the object (2) in a first situation (S1) and on the basis of a relative speed between the first motor vehicle (1) and the object (2) in a second situation (S2). It is determined whether the first situation or the second situation (S2) is occurring on the basis of the respective position of the four corners (7r, 7l, 8r, 8l) relative to the travel envelope (6).
