Disclosed is a brake system (700) for a rail vehicle (1), comprising a brake controller (780) that includes a first brake control unit (786) configured to provide braking functions (334) and output a force manipulated variable, further comprising an actuator (782) that includes: - a second brake control unit (790) configured to provide braking functions and output a force manipulated variable, - a first actuator control unit (788) configured to provide functions for generating a frictional braking force on the basis of the force manipulated variable and to output an actuation variable, - a second actuator control unit (792) configured to provide functions for generating a frictional braking force on the basis of the force manipulated variable and to output an actuation variable, and - a braking force unit configured to provide functions for generating a frictional braking force on the basis of the actuation variable, the brake system also comprising a first braking path from functions that are active between a control input by the brake system and the generation of a braking force, and a second braking path from functions that are active between control inputs by the brake system and the generation of a braking force.
