A steel cord-rubber composite (100) comprising a steel cord core (110), a steel cord coating layer (120) bonded or physically bonded to the steel cord core (110), and a rubber adhesion layer (130) bonded or physically bonded to the steel cord coating layer (120) is disclosed. The steel cord coating layer (120) comprises from 61 wt% to 66 wt% copper, from 3.4 wt% to 6.5 wt% iron and a balance of zinc; wherein the rubber adhesion layer (130) is formed from a rubber compound comprising 100 phr of at least one elastomer, sulfur, 20 phr to 100 phr of at least one filler, 2 phr to 15 phr of zinc oxide and 0.5 phr to 3.0 phr of at least one accelerator; and wherein neither the steel cord coating layer (120) nor the rubber compound comprises cobalt. Also, a process for preparing a steel cord-rubber composite is disclosed and an article comprising a main rubber portion and a steel cord-rubber composite reinforcement.
