The invention discloses a cobalt-free steel cord-rubber composite material. A steel cord-rubber composite (100) is disclosed that includes a steel cord core (110), a steel cord coating (120) bonded or physically bonded to the steel cord core (110), and a rubber adhesive layer (130) bonded or physically bonded to the steel cord coating (120). The steel cord coating (120) comprises 61% to 66% by weight of copper, 3.4% to 6.5% by weight of iron, and the balance of zinc; wherein the rubber adhesion layer (130) is formed from a rubber compound comprising 100 phr of at least one elastomer, sulfur, 20 phr to 100 phr of at least one filler, 2 phr to 15 phr of zinc oxide and 0.5 phr to 3.0 phr of at least one accelerator; and wherein neither the steel cord coating (120) nor the rubber compound contains cobalt. Further, a method of making the steel cord-rubber composite, and an article including the main rubber portion and the steel cord-rubber composite reinforcement, are disclosed.
