Described systems and techniques enable fast and efficient compression of lidar data for analysis and other processing, without disrupting a primary processing path of the lidar data. Consequently, it is possible to identify, transmit, and store a desired subset of lidar data in a fast and efficient manner, while continuing to use the lidar data for a primary purpose, such as autonomous driving and control of a vehicle. For example, lidar sensor data may be received from at least one lidar sensor disposed on a vehicle, and a subset of the lidar sensor data may be collected in a compression buffer. The subset of the lidar sensor data from the compression buffer may be compressed to obtain compressed lidar sensor data, and the compressed lidar sensor data may be transmitted from the vehicle for remote processing of the lidar sensor data to characterize vehicle movement.
