According to the invention, at least one monitoring step is carried out in which a delay time (VZ) which has elapsed between a first data packet (DP1) being sent out from a first railway component (10) of the railway track system (1) to a second railway component (20) of the railway track system (1) and this first data packet (DP1) being received in the second component (20) is determined and, depending on whether the delay time (VZ) exceeds a predefined threshold value (SW), at least one warning signal (WS, WS1, WS2) is generated, wherein the delay time (VZ) is determined by the send time at which the first component (10) sends the first data packet (DP1) being logged by the first component (10) so as to form a first time stamp (ZS1), the receive time at which the second component (20) receives the first data packet (DP1) being logged by the second component (20) so as to form a second time stamp (ZS2), and the delay time (VZ) being determined by calculating the difference between the first and second time stamp (ZS1, ZS2).
