The invention relates to an electrical drive system for a vehicle, and to a vehicle with a drive system of this kind. The electrical drive system (100) comprises a high-voltage, direct-current circuit, HV-DC circuit (2); an alternating-current circuit, AC circuit (3); an AC/DC inverter (4) for coupling the HV-DC circuit (2) and the AC circuit (3); and a traction energy storage system (10) for providing electrical power for the HV-DC circuit (2). The traction energy storage system (10) comprises a plurality of electrical energy storage devices (11a, 11b, 11n), wherein each energy storage device (11a, 11b, 11n) comprises a plurality of cells (12) and an energy storage controller (13). In order to limit switch-on currents when switching on the traction energy storage system, a central precharging device (20) is provided or alternatively precharging circuits which are associated with the individual energy storage devices are provided, the central precharging device or precharging circuits comprising a pulse-width-modulated semiconductor assembly for limiting switch-on currents.
