A pulley block comprises first and second plates 10, 12 and a pulley sheave 30 disposed between the plates 10, 12 for rotation on bearings 32, 34 upon a sheave axle assembly that includes a main sheave axle 40 that extends between the plates along a sheave axis As. The plates 10, 12 are connected to the sheave axle 40 so as to permit rotation of one plate with respect to the other about the sheave axis As between a closed position (fig. 1) and an open position (fig. 5). Each plate 10, 12 has a respective bollard formation 110, 112 at a position remote from the sheave axis As, which are disposed such that the bollard formations 110, 112 are in contact with or in close proximity to one another when the plates 10, 12 are in the closed position to form a bollard that extends between the plates 10, 12 and the bollard formations 110, 112 are spaced apart when the plates 10, 12 are in the open position. The main sheave axle 40 may be fixed for rotation with respect to the first plate 10 and free for rotation with respect to the second plate 12 and an axle cap 42 may clamp the main axle 40 to the first plate 10, the axle cap 42 being removably secured to the main axle 40.
