The invention relates to a method for estimating geometric parameters (R1M) representing the shape of a road, using at least one sensor and one analysis module equipping a motor vehicle (100) situated on said road, comprising in particular the following steps: - estimating, as a function of the position of detected points marking an edge (LM; LL) of at least one traffic lane (LA) of said road, parameters (R1M) of a first geometric model, representing the shape of at least a portion of said road, - determining a limit position with respect to the motor vehicle, up to which the first previously configured geometric model describes, with a given precision, the shape of said road, and - estimating the parameters of a second geometric model representing the shape of said road beyond said limit position.
