The invention relates substantially to a method for relative position determination of two trains, in which image data from at least one plate of a second train is received from cameras of the first train, in which plate information of the second train is determined using an object identification, in which a first relative position between a camera of the first train and at least one plate of the second train is determined in the first train and communicated to the second train, in which, simultaneously, a second relative position between a camera of the second train and at least one plate of the first train is determined in the second train and communicated to the first train, in which a comparison is made in the first and second train of the separation measurements of both trains, and in which, in at least one of the two trains, either a braking curve calculation for a coupling of the two trains or a braking curve calculation for adjacent parking of the two trains with a specified ideal separation is respectively performed. Through the video-based visual sensor system, for example, an image or a video stream is detected, and both a quick reaction through information reduction and a follow-up check using the full camera image are enabled. Video-based surveillance systems are often already available, and/or a complete implementation is possible on the basis of inexpensive standard hardware. The invention provides, inter alia, a possible precondition for automatic coupling without manual interaction.
