The invention relates to a method for detecting at least one lane marker (1) of a lane (21) lying ahead of a vehicle (10), in that the image data, generated by an SD camera (11), of the carriageway (20) lying ahead of the vehicle (10) is fed to an evaluation unit (13) for evaluation. According to the invention there is provision that on the basis of the image data a road altitude profile (P1) is generated transversely with respect to the direction (F) of travel of the vehicle (10) by means of the evaluation unit (13), in the course of the road altitude profile (P1) jumps (S11, S12) in altitude which indicate at least one elevated section (1.1) compared to the plane of the carriageway (20) are detected on the basis of the road altitude profile (P1), the value (b1) of the distance (B1) between the jumps (S11, S12) in altitude of the at least one elevated section (1.1) and the value (h1) of the height (H1) of the jump (S11, S12) in altitude which indicates the at least one elevated section are determined as geometry data of the at least one elevated section (1.1) by means of the evaluation unit (13), and by comparing the values (b1, h1) of the geometry data of the at least one elevated section (1.1) with geometry data stored in the evaluation unit a carriageway marker (1) of the carriageway (20) is detected.
