Embodiments described herein relate to a charging assembly for use with a battery. The assembly includes an engine, a voltage regulator, an engine control unit, a charge controller, and a rectifier. The engine drives an alternator for generating any one of a single-phase or multi-phase AC voltage. A voltage regulator is in communication with the alternator. The rectifier converts an AC voltage from the alternator to DC before it is delivered to the battery pack. During charging of the battery, the engine is operated at a variable speed, including initially a higher revolution per minute corresponding to a maximum charging rate when a current charge of the battery is at or below a predetermined threshold level, followed by a decrease in revolution per minute with an increase in battery temperature and an increase in the current charge of the battery, during which the engine is operated at a variable speed, the charge rate is slowed down as indicated by the battery management system.
