The driver monitoring device is provided with a processor that acquires surrounding vehicle information, surrounding road environment information, and driver line-of-sight direction information, performs automatic driving or driving assistance of the host vehicle on the basis of the surrounding vehicle information and the surrounding road environment information, and determines whether or not the driver has sufficient visual recognition in the direction of travel of the host vehicle. Warning the driver when visual recognition of the driver in the traveling direction of the host vehicle is insufficient, and changing a non-visual recognition criterion for determining that visual recognition of the driver in the traveling direction of the host vehicle is insufficient; and changing the non-visual recognition determination criterion such that the greater the number of vehicles parked or decelerating in the surrounding area is, the more easily the driver's visual recognition is determined to be insufficient.
