A method for controlling the speed of a vehicle, a control unit, a computer readable storage medium, a braking system and a vehicle, in particular a method for controlling the speed of a vehicle according to actual driving conditions, comprising: determining an actual speed value of the vehicle; determining a maximum speed value and determining a critical speed value; determining an actual driving condition, the driving condition being at least one of: determining an overspeed driving condition if the actual speed value is greater than the maximum speed value and less than the critical speed value, and determining an accelerated driving condition if the vehicle is accelerated and the actual speed value is less than the maximum speed value, determining a normal driving condition if the vehicle is not accelerated and the actual speed value is less than the maximum speed value; a target speed value less than the maximum speed value is determined, and if the driving condition is determined as an overspeed driving condition, the method includes determining a speed brake signal value for actuating the friction brake unit according to the target speed value and providing the speed brake signal value to the brake system to actuate the friction brake unit.
