The invention relates to the technical field of hybrid electric vehicles, in particular to a method for controlling the starting process of a power split type hybrid power system and a system applying the method. The method comprises the steps that the starting stage of the power split type hybrid power system is determined, and the starting stage of the power split type hybrid power system comprises a starting initial stage and a starting middle stage; if the starting stage of the power split type hybrid power system is the initial starting stage, torque consumed by a gear ring is calculated, and the power split type hybrid power system is controlled based on the torque consumed by the gear ring; and if the stage of the power split type hybrid power system is the starting middle stage, the power split type hybrid power system is controlled to be switched between a rotating speed control mode and a torque control mode. The problem that part of starting torque generated when a pure electric mode is switched to a hybrid mode in the whole vehicle running process is transmitted to a transmission system is solved, and the power performance, smoothness and comfort of whole vehicle running are improved.
