An engine start control method for a hybrid electric vehicle, the hybrid electric vehicle including an engine, a drive motor, and a clutch disposed between the engine and the drive motor, the method comprising: when the engine is started, determining a basic torque capacity of the drive motor according to an accelerator pedal signal, determining the torque capacity adjustment amount of the driving motor according to the target torque capacity of the clutch and the actual torque capacity of the clutch; calculating the target torque capacity of the driving motor according to the basic torque capacity of the driving motor and the torque capacity adjustment amount of the driving motor; and the torque of the driving motor is controlled based on the target torque capacity of the driving motor, so that the final torque capacity transmitted to the gearbox is kept stable. As a result, better drivability can be achieved. The invention further discloses an engine starting control device of the hybrid electric vehicle.
