The invention discloses a fog concentration detection method for highway video monitoring. The method comprises the following steps: estimating atmospheric light and local illumination estimation of an image, and extracting a roughly estimated transmissivity value in an input video frame in combination with transmissivity estimation prior; correcting the preliminary transmissivity calculation result by estimating the image environment illumination; removing a road plane area which interferes with a fog detection result by detecting a road edge and a lane line; based on the prior information that the length of the lane line on the expressway is fixed, the relation between the depth of field and the image coordinate is established, and the fog concentration is accurately estimated based on the depth of field and the transmissivity information. According to the method, the influence of the sky, the road and other areas on transmissivity calculation is considered, the scene priori of the expressway is combined to estimate the depth of field, the fog concentration detection accuracy of video monitoring is effectively improved, and the method can be applied to an expressway video monitoring system as an image processing plug-in.
