The invention relates to a method for operating a motor vehicle (10) having a drive unit and a transmission. When the transmission is force-transmitting, the cruise control function is activated and a cruise control target speed (11) is predetermined, a predicted speed profile (12) is calculated on the basis of travel route data of a travel route in front of the motor vehicle, which predicted speed profile will be generated when the motor vehicle rolls or slides in a non-force-transmitting manner by the transmission. A maximum deviation (vMAX) between the cruise setpoint speed (11) and the predicted speed profile (12) is ascertained, and a maximum permissible duration (tMAX) of the rolling or coasting mode of the motor vehicle is ascertained as a function of the maximum deviation. A check is made as to whether the predicted speed profile (12) has returned to the cruise setpoint speed (11) within a maximum permissible duration (tMAX) of the rolling or coasting mode, the rolling or coasting mode being activated if it is confirmed that the predicted speed profile (12) has returned to the cruise setpoint speed (11) within the maximum permissible duration (tMAX), and wherein the rolling or coasting mode is activated if it is confirmed that the predicted speed profile (12) has returned to the cruise setpoint speed (11) within the maximum permissible duration (tMAX). If it is confirmed that the predicted speed profile (12) does not return to the cruise setpoint speed (11) within the maximum permissible duration (tMAX), a disabled rolling or coasting operation is maintained.
