According to the invention, a mechanical excitation device (7) is arranged by means of which the overhead line (5) can be vibrated by means of an active excitation, the sensor (8) being provided to detect a vibration course, and the evaluation device (11) being provided to derive a mechanical property of the overhead line (5) from the vibration course. A mechanical property, such as elasticity, of the overhead line (5) is determined in the evaluation device (11) as a function of a characteristic of the respective vibration curve (12).
