The invention discloses a multi-lane vehicle speed detection method and system, and belongs to the technical field of vehicle speed calculation, and the method comprises the steps: carrying out the mixed Gaussian modeling of an expressway video, obtaining a vehicle-free expressway background image, then carrying out the detection of lane lines, carrying out the coordinate transformation through the edge coordinates of the lane lines and the distance between the lane lines, and obtaining a vehicle-free expressway background image; and obtaining virtual detection areas of different lane lines with accurate distances, and calculating the speed of the vehicle passing through the detection areas by taking the mass center of the vehicle as a reference from a known vehicle track. Coordinate transformation is carried out on end point coordinates of lane lines, detection area division is carried out on multiple lanes in an expressway, and the average speed of a vehicle passing through the detection area is calculated by using a video frame rate; the technical problem that the speed detection precision is reduced due to the fact that the speed measurement areas of the lanes on the two sides of the highway cannot be set according to the position information of the lane lines in the existing highway scene is solved.
