A battery system for a vehicle includes: a plurality of battery modules, each of the plurality of battery modules including a respective management module; and a main management module configured to communicate with the management module and a battery control module. Each of the management modules includes: a communication interface configured to send data to and receive data from the master management module; and a diagnostic module configured to monitor an operating parameter of a respective one of the plurality of battery modules, detect a fault associated with the respective one of the plurality of battery modules based on the operating parameter, and selectively output a signal indicative of the detected fault.
