The invention relates to a method for assessing and improving the driving style of a driver based on safety level criteria. A method for improving a driving style of a driver in a vehicle includes: collecting and processing sensor data; feeding the measured sensor data as input to the neural network module; providing physics-based route classification and physics-based driver driving style classification as well as machine learning route classification and machine learning driver driving style classification to a feedback module; providing a simulated driver signal to a vehicle simulation module based on the driving suggestion and the environmental data to provide a simulated vehicle state signal; generating a simulated physical-based route classification and a simulated physical-based driver's driving style classification, and predicting a simulated machine-learned route classification and a simulated machine-learned driver's driving style classification; and checking whether the driving suggestion has improved the safety level, and if so, providing the driving suggestion to the driver.
