A collision energy absorbing member (1) for an automobile according to the present invention is provided with: a cylindrical member (3) formed using a cap cross-section member having a top plate section (7a) and a vertical wall section (7b); a coating film forming member (5) that is formed of a material having a lower strength than the cylindrical member (3) and that is disposed at a portion including a corner portion (7c) connecting the top plate portion (7a) and the vertical wall portion (7b) among the outer surfaces of the top plate portion (7a) and the vertical wall portion (7b) so as to be spaced apart from the outer surface of the top plate portion (7a), the outer surface of the vertical wall portion (7b), and the outer surface of the corner portion (7c) by a gap (11) of 0.2-3 mm; and a coating film (13) formed in the gap (11) and formed from an electrodeposition coating material.
