A collision energy absorbing member (1) for an automobile according to the present invention is provided with: a cylindrical member (3) formed using a cap-shaped cross-sectional member having a top plate section (7a) and a vertical wall section (7b); a coating film forming member (5) which forms a coating film on a portion including a corner portion (7c) connecting the top plate portion (7a) and the vertical wall portion (7b) among the inner surfaces of the top plate portion (7a) and the vertical wall portion (7b), the coating film being disposed so as to be spaced apart from the inner surface of the top plate portion (7a), the inner surface of the vertical wall portion (7b), and the inner surface of the corner portion (7c) by a gap (11) of 0.2-3 mm, and which is made of a material having a lower strength than the cylindrical member (3); and a coating film (13) formed in the gap (11) and formed from an electrodeposition coating material.
