The invention relates to the field of hoisting machinery, and discloses a crane and an anti-overturning control method thereof.The crane comprises a hanging assembly (4) used for being connected with a hoisted load and balance weight modules (3) oppositely arranged at intervals relative to the hanging assembly, and each balance weight module (3) comprises a self-discharging balance weight (31) locked at an installation position through a self-discharging locking mechanism (5); the self-discharging locking mechanism (5) is arranged to release at least part of the self-discharging balance weight (31) under the condition that the hanging assembly (4) is unloaded suddenly, so that at least part of the self-discharging balance weight falls off from the installation position. According to the crane, at least part of the self-discharging balance weight can be released under the condition of sudden unloading such as rope breaking, so that the lifting motion caused by the violent change of the instantaneous load borne by the suspension arm is inhibited, the bending moment impact on the mounting foundation where the crane is located is reduced or avoided, and the risk of overturning accidents is effectively reduced; and the design requirements of ultra-large cranes can be met.
