The invention relates to a method for deactivating automated driving of a vehicle (1). According to the invention, a first value, a second value and a third value are set as threshold values, the second value being greater than the first value and the third value being greater than the second value, and the automated driving is automatically terminated in the event that at least one hand of the vehicle user is detected on the steering wheel of the vehicle (1). The manual steering torque acting on the steering wheel of the vehicle (1) exceeds a specified first value of the system steering torque generated by the control system (3) of the assistance system (2) for automated driving; if no hand of the vehicle user is detected on the steering wheel, the manual steering torque acting on the steering wheel of the vehicle (1) exceeds a specified second value of the system steering torque generated by the control system (3) of the assistance system (2) for automated driving; alternatively, in the event that the vehicle user is distracted from a driving event or in the event that there is a risk of a lateral collision with respect to the vehicle (1) and the manual steering torque acts in the direction of the risk of the collision, the steering torque is applied to the vehicle (1). The manual steering torque acting on the steering wheel of the vehicle (1) exceeds the system steering torque generated by the control system (3) of the assistance system (2) for automated driving by a defined third value.
