The invention relates to a vehicle control system, a vehicle control method, and a recording medium. A vehicle control system is provided with: a peripheral information acquisition unit that acquires information about the periphery of a host vehicle; and an automatic driving control unit that automatically selects and executes a first automatic driving mode in which a lane change is automatically performed at least in part, and a second automatic driving mode in which a lane change is automatically performed at least in part, on the basis of the information about the surroundings of the host vehicle acquired by the surroundings information acquisition unit. The second automatic driving mode is a mode in which lane change is not performed automatically; and a notification control unit that causes an output unit to output information that prompts to switch to manual driving in front of a branch point when the vehicle travels along a predetermined route while the second automatic driving mode is being executed, if a condition including the presence of the branch point from the main road to the branch road is satisfied.
