The invention provides a range extender. The range extender comprises a rotating speed and torque decoupling module, an NT/TN control mode selection module, a multi-mode driving selection module and ageneral/rapid power increasing and decreasing mode selection module. The multi-mode driving selection module, the rotating speed and torque decoupling module, the general/rapid power increasing and decreasing mode selection module and the NT/TN control mode selection module are in signal connection in sequence. The invention further provides a range extender control power generation method. The range extender and the method have a constant power/constant voltage/multipoint/power following power generation mode and are diversified in power generation mode. NT (torque/rotational speed) and TN (rotational speed/torque) control modes are possessed, and lifting power ride comfort is achieved. A permanent magnet synchronous range extender controller (RCU) is compatible with an engine rotating speed-generator torque (NT) control mode and an engine torque-generator rotating speed (TN) control mode, an application range is wider, and more choices are provided for customers.
