A method and apparatus for sensing wheel brake torque of a highly automated driving (HAD) vehicle (20) includes a wheel hub (66) with rotor (68) configured to rotate around a rotation axis (120) as the vehicle (20) moves and a brake caliper (74), including a brake pad (76,82), configured to apply a caliper force to the wheel hub (66). A reaction carriage (84) is interconnected with the brake caliper (74) and is configured to have a reaction force applied to it when the brake caliper (74) applies the caliper force to the wheel hub (66). The wheel torque sensor includes a hydraulic chamber (94,98) having a hydraulic fluid (103) and a pressure sensor (104), interconnected with the hydraulic chamber (94,98), that senses pressure applied to the hydraulic fluid (103) in response to the reactionforce.
