The invention belongs to the technical field of urban viaduct information acquisition and processing, and particularly relates to a viaduct road segment traffic congestion index calculation method based on a microwave vehicle detector. The method comprises the following steps that 1) the microwave vehicle detector is installed on a viaduct road segment to be detected and debugged; 2) the detected data of the microwave vehicle detector are obtained; 3) equivalent traffic volume QLj of a single lane is calculated; 4) average density KLj of the single lane is calculated; 5) average driving speed VLj of the single lane is calculated; 6) average driving speed V<-> of the viaduct road segment is calculated; and 7) a viaduct road segment traffic congestion index TCI is calculated. The viaduct road segment traffic congestion index calculation method based on the microwave vehicle detector has advantages of convenient maintenance without damage to the road surface or influence on traffic, and can synchronously realize an online high-precision measurement and calculation function so that real-time and accurate evaluation of the traffic congestion state of the urban viaduct road segment can be performed finally.
