The invention provides an intelligent drive-by-wire electro-hydraulic steering system for automobiles and a control method of the intelligent drive-by-wire electro-hydraulic steering system. The system is composed of a steering wheel-road sense motor assembly, an electro-hydraulic power assisting device and a steering control unit. A road sense motor is connected with a steering shaft through a worm wheel and a worm, simulates the steering road sense and makes a steering wheel actively return. A steering motor is connected with a rotary valve element of a hydraulic steering gear through a worm wheel and a worm. On one hand, the torque of the steering motor can be transmitted to a steering gear through a torsion bar so as to overcome the steering resistance, and on the other hand, relative rotation of the valve element and a valve sleeve can be controlled through the torque of the steering motor so that the opening degree of a rotary valve can be controlled and the magnitude of hydraulic resistance can be controlled. The working mode that work is conducted through motor drive and hydraulic pressure at the same time and the working mode that work is conducted only through motor drive assistance are achieved. According to the control method, the road sense motor, the steering motor and a steering pump are controlled according to information such as driver actions, road surface conditions, vehicle states and system parameters, and therefore the functions of assistance control, damping control, return control, auxiliary driving, automatic parking and the like can be achieved.
