The invention provides a drive system for train traction. The operating method comprises the following steps: processing constant-voltage constant-frequency alternating current transmitted by a traction generator by virtue of two paths of a rectifier and an inverter in a traction converter, then outputting variable voltage variable frequency alternating current, respectively supplying power to two traction motors, finding a preset torque value according to a low constant speed instruction when the traction converter receives the low constant speed instruction transmitted by TCMS, through vector control, outputting a corresponding control voltage to the traction motors, driving a train to start at low speed, sampling a speed signal of the train, calculating the difference between the current speed and the set speed and an acceleration value, adjusting the set torque value, sampling the current and speed sensor signals of the traction motors, correcting the control voltage, and performing low constant speed control on the train. Therefore, the train operates under the operating condition, an alternating current drive system is adopted by virtue of the traction converter, alternative operation of two working conditions, namely high-speed operation and low constant speed operation, are compatible, and the conversion efficiency is improved.
