A traction system for a train comprises a plurality of transformers 2 for stepping down an AC voltage from an overhead power cable. A plurality of first switches 5 are closable to respectively connect the high voltage HV side of the primary coil or winding of each transformer 2 to the overhead wire. The plurality of first switches 5 is controlled to close in sequence, with a first predetermined time interval between closures. A plurality of AC-DC converters 1 each converts the stepped down alternating current from one of the transformers 2 to direct current , using pulse width modulation. The PWM rectifiers 1 have the same switching frequency, but are phase shifted. The converters 1 are all activated to convert AC to DC power simultaneously, after all of the first switches 5 have been closed. Multiple trains or carriages T1, T2 may be coupled together, each with respective traction systems, wherein a second traction system’s T2 first switches 5 may begin closing in sequence after the first switches 5 of the first train T1 have closed. The system may reduce harmonic noise from PWM switching and from inrush current.
