AbstractThe large-scale manufacturing of electronic and electrical components in space is discussed in detail. The system constraints are: the use of non-terrestrial raw material, the processing techniques must be compatible with zero-gravity requiring no processing gases or liquids, the processes should be continuous, automated and easily maintained, and finally existing technologies should be utilized to minimize R&D costs. The manufacturing of silicon solar cells, discrete and integrated semiconductor devices, fiber optics and transmission lines are discussed. The refining and growth of crystalline silicon for semiconductors and silica for fiber optics is covered as is the doping, metallization and lithography of semiconductor silicon. It is shown that the most mass intensive electrical components can be fabricated with the aforementioned limitations.
