Abstract The study of the flow-pattern of energetic protons (35–1600 keV) associated with interplanetary shocks observed by ISEE-3, is analyzed as a function of the relative position of the spacecraft with respect to the shock and to the solar activity that has triggered the events, and is complemented with a statistical study on the thickness of bidirectional particle regimes associated with interplanetary shocks. The result indicates that the region behind the shock where the driver would be located extends over a wide angle around the longitude of the triggering event, with little asymmetry with respect to the propagation direction.
