Abstract A considerable number of travelling interplanetary shocks have been observed at ISEE-3 since launch in 1978. Proton events associated with these shocks range from large ESP events with intensities enhanced for several hours to small shock spikes lasting only a few minutes, as well as events where no intensity increases are observable. In this paper, a summary of results of statistical surveys of proton intensity profiles, spectra and 3-dimensional anisotropies in the energy range 35- to 1600-keV are presented. Selected examples of events which exhibit characteristics of current theories of shock acceleration are presented and discussed.
