Abstract The development of behavioural disaggregate travel choice models has in recent years provided an important procedure for investigating the underlying determinants of various travel choice acts (e.g. frequency of travel, choice of mode, etc.). The use of attitudinal techniques has provided an opportunity to identify a range of attributes beyond the more traditional travel time and cost variables (such as the underlying characteristics of “comfort” and “convenience”). However, such attitudinal techniques while useful in identifying a wider range of potential policy variables are restricted in that these extended variables are in measurement units that are difficult to represent in planning models. The aim of this paper is to present the approach and results of research recently undertaken in Australia which was designed to identify an extended set of attributes measured in “policy sensitive units”. The implications of the results for identifying a broad range of policy options are discussed.
