AbstractThe effect of clouds on the shortwave radiation budget of the earth-atmosphere system is examined in terms of the shortwave cloud-radiative forcing. Cloud forcing for July 1985, at the top of the atmosphere (TOA), at the surface and of the atmospheric column are determined on a global scale from the C1 data of the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project, and using a method designed to derive the shortwave radiation budget from satellite measurements. The TOA cloud-radiative forcing is also compared to that obtained from the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment. The analysis of the computed fluxes shows a strong linear correlation between TOA and surface cloud forcing. The cloud forcing at the surface is almost identical to that at the TOA, while the forcing of the atmosphere is relatively small.
