AbstractA physical model for deriving surface solar radiation from satellite observations has been developed /1,2/. The model was previously implemented with GOES data and tested against ground truth locally and regionally. The International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) geostationary satellite data /3/ are suitable for obtaining global fields of solar radiation that account for the diurnal cycle. Issues that relate to global implementation and validation with these data are: a) the ISCCP geostationary satellite data have been obtained with several sensors; b) lack of ground truth on large scale.
