Paper points out inter-relationship between needs, requirements, problems, progress, and opportunities which determines rate and scope of future underwater technology developments; basic systems required for exploration of ocean bottom are considered -- new class of deep-submersible vehicles and various types of support ships; navigation systems which employ transponder beacons as beach marks that will permit navigation by deeply submerged vehicles and will also permit tie to surface-navigation grids; latter capability might be achieved through network of surface buoys; development of saturation diving and tools for saturated diver.
