Program of API on atmospheric pollution includes work on influence of gasoline volatility on automotive evaporation and exhaust emissions; paper deals with engine starting and warm-up performance response as related to reduction in gasoline volatility from current levels; 10 cars with and 10 cars without exhaust emissions control systems, all 1966 models, were tested; test fuels bracketed volatility characteristics of available products; test temperatures covered range from satisfactory to unsatisfactory performance; car starting and warm-up performance improved with increasing fuel volatility; degree of improvement varies among cars; no marked effect of exhaust emission control systems was observed.
