Analysis of fundamental limitations of roll control and vibration isolation, such as experienced in automobiles, tracked military vehicles, etc; optimum roll responses to step input in lateral acceleration are derived from calculus of variations; responses show that pendulous suspension (where roll center is above passengers) can be made to exert zero net lateral acceleration on passengers; finite lateral acceleration will always be present during maneuvers of vehicles equipped with conventional suspensions (where roll center is below passengers); substantial benefits accruing from use of preview control (where roadway ahead of moving vehicle is sensed) are presented.
