It is shown that more power and economy can be obtained with given fuel quality by combining inherent advantages of higher compression ratios with mechanical octane advantages of combustion chamber design, spark retarding, and mixture richening; proper balance of these variables can lead to improved performance with overall gain in utilization of fuel.
