Noise associated with aircraft flying at supersonic speeds is shown to depend primarily on shock wave pattern formed by aircraft; study of such patterns around aircraft in accelerated and retarded flight leads to explanation of booms, of short duration, heard by ground observers after aircraft has dived at supersonic speeds.
